Today’s interview is with indie fiction and non-fiction author Scott King.

Scott was born in Washington D.C. and raised in Ocean City, Maryland. He received his undergraduate degree in film from Towson University, and his M.F.A. in film from American University. Until moving to Texas, to follow his wife’s career, King worked as a college professor teaching photography, digital arts, and writing related classes. He now works full time as a game photographer and author. His non-fiction books are The 5 Day Novel, Finish the Script, and the most recent Story Pitch. His fiction books for kids included The Zimmah Chronicles (Book 1 Cupcakes vs Brownies, Book 2 Mermaids vs Unicorns, and Book 3 Genies vs Djinn), The Eye of Hastur, and National Cthulhu Eats Spaghetti Day.

                            

In this interview, Scott gives great advice and tips on how to structure your middle-grade novel. He covers:

  • What you need to know to write middle-grade books – know the story you want to tell and the appropriate age group for your book.
  • How writing a “story pitch” can help you write your novel.
  • Every good book needs a protagonist that wants something and there needs to be something or someone who stands in their way of getting it.

Today’s interview is with indie author and marketing expert Beau Blackwell.

  • How to write books for children on topics you genuinely care about and get them into the world.

  • The benefits of joining supportive facebook groups with other authors.
  • How to position yourself in the marketplace so that you can find your core readers. Choose a small group of people who would love to read your books and ask yourself “Who are they?” “What do they care about?” and “Where do they hang out?” Whether you realize it or not, your books are saying “Here is who I am. Here is what I write. Here is what I believe in.”

EPISODE 16: How to write an award winning book series with Marc Remus

Today’s interview is with indie author Marc Remus.

Marc Remus is an award-winning German Neo Pop-Art painter, illustrator and author. His paintings are exhibited world-wide. His first book series Magora (a middle grade series) features six books, three of which have been published and three more which are coming. So far the books released in the series are The Gallery of Wonders, The Golden Maple Tree, and the Bridge in the Fog. 

Marc is one of those rare authors that has patience; he wrote the entire Magora series over a period of 20 years, perfecting it and is releasing one book every six months or so. He is also working on a new YA book about a tribe in Scotland that steals languages.

Today’s interview is with indie author Karen Inglis.

Karen has sold over 10,000 books during her author career. Her stand alone book titles are proof that you don’t have to write a series in order to make it as an indie author. Her books include The Secret Lake, Ferdinand Fox’s Big Sleep, Henry Hanes and the Great Escape, Walter Brown and the Magician’s Hat and Eeek The Runaway Alien. All fabulous sounding titles and clearly well researched and written books.

EPISODE 13: Selling over 50,000 children’s books with Bobbie Hinman

Today’s interview is with author Bobbie Hinman.

    

Bobbie Hinman is the author and creator of the award-winning best fairy book series which includes The Knot Fairy, The Sock Fairy, The Fart Fairy, The Freckle Fairy, and The Belly Button Fairy.  Bobbie’s fairy books have sold more than 50,000 copies and received 25 children’s book awards. Bobbie recently published the book HOW TO CREATE A SUCCESSFUL CHILDREN’S PICTURE BOOK to help other authors navigate the process and get it right from the beginning.

                      

In this interview Bobbie covers:

  • The importance of getting your story right for the age group you are targeting. With children’s books especially, writing a story that children respond to depending on their age group is very important. When you know the age you are aiming your story at, this will influence how you write the story. Bobbie also suggests testing your story with a kids focus group. Read your book to a group of children that are the target age, and get their feedback. When you ask children for help and feedback they will definitely give it. Take it on board and make the book even better. This also gives you confidence that you have written a great book for your target market.
  • Definitely get your picture book edited. Lots of people think they don’t need an editor for a children’s book, but the words are even more important when there are less of them. You need to get them right as they can change the meaning of the story!
  • How to find and work with an illustrator. The pictures are vitally important and need to enhance the story not just imitate the words.
  • How to sell your books in person at fairs/events and through school visits. Bobbie covers what she charges for school visits and how to make them successful. Lots of opportunities for children’s book authors available through face to face sales. She then takes photos at live events which can be used to indirectly promote the books on social media. Very clever!
  • Her book production process. Rather than using print on demand, Bobbie does large print runs of her books and includes a CD with each book. She walks us through the process she uses. The printer she uses is Amica Inc and is based in the US.
  • The more credibility you have as an author the easier it becomes to sell your books – book awards can be very useful for this. Bobbie mentions a few of the more reputable ones including Mom’s Choice, Benjamin Franklin Award, IPPY, and Moonbeam.
  • Owning your ISBN and Copyright are essential as an independent author.

In this interview Ashley covers Instafreebie extensively including:

  • How to use Instafreebie to gain new readers and email subscribers. There are different levels for authors to join (basic plan, plus plan, and pro plan) each offering different features. The whole concept is that you give away a free book, partial book or sneak peek and readers opt-in to your mailing list in order to receive their free content.
  • With Instafreebie you basically:
    • Upload your ebook file to their secure server
    • Set the number of copies and expiration date
    • Generate a link and share the link with your fans
    • Readers choose a file type and opt-in to your list
  • Load your book as an epub document and Instafreebie will convert it to a mobi (for kindle) and pdf file. Ashley mentions that an equal amount of people (roughly) are downloading pdf’s and epub files combined, compared with mobi kindle versions of books. This is good news for authors wanting to sell across all platforms (rather than be exclusive to Amazon) as there are readers on Instafreebie that are not just from Amazon.
  • Instfreebie subscribers tend to be avid readers (not just freebie hunters) and are therefore much more engaged subscribers.
  • It can be difficult for children’s book authors to load larger files on Instafreebie if they have lots of illustrations, so you can contact support for help at support@instafreebie.com and they will work with you to get your book up.
  • Instafreebie has been particularly great at facilitating joint author promotions. The main reason for this is that authors can create a page where all the giveaways are listed and promote this one page. When readers arrive at the page, they click the books they genuinely want to download, subscribing through Instafreebie to YOUR list (if they picked your book). Instafreebie then delivers the free book to your new reader and adds this person to your list. If you are with Mailchimp Instafreebie can automatically add the readers to your list (and thereby your automated sequence). If you are not using Mailchimp, you can manually move your list from Instafreebie into your email provider list. In terms of promoting the author giveaway page, you can use the hashtag #instfreebie to help spread the word, post it on social media and get more attention to your giveaway. You can also let Instafreebie know you are running a joint promotion and they will often help by promoting it through their emails too, really boosting reader eyes on your promotion page and book. You can email production@instafreebie.com to let them know if you are running a joint author promotion.
  • Instafreebie also loves hosting EXCLUSIVE book giveaways that are not available for sale or download anywhere else. This could increase your book download rate.
  • Instafreebie also host a forum where you can find group giveaways to be a part of. You need to be signed up and logged in to access it at www.instafreebie.com/forum.

EPISODE 10: Successful joint author promotions with J. Philip Horne

Today’s interview is with indie author J. Philip Horne.

J. Philip Horne probably shouldn’t be alive. Born in Florida, he grew up overseas, for the most part, spending much of his childhood in Liberia and Micronesia. During those years, he experienced numerous attempts on his life. The wannabe killers included malaria, spinal meningitis, blood poisoning, a staph infection in his heel bone, a close encounter with a green mamba, and other cold-hearted foes.

From his earliest years, his parents read to him fantastical stories from wonderful worlds. Narnia and Middle Earth featured prominently, and had his youth been a generation later, he would have certainly encountered Hogwarts at a young age. Through his teen years he read stories by many other authors and experienced a host of new worlds.

After dabbling in writing for many years, he finally got serious and wrote his first novel in 2011. He has continued to write ever since. He currently lives in Dallas, Texas with his wife, four children, two dogs, two rabbits, and several literary aspirations.

EPISODE 9: Advantages of selling on multiple platforms with Kevin Tumlinson

Today’s interview is with award-winning and bestselling author, podcast host, keynote speaker, and Director of Marketing for Draft2Digital, Kevin Tumlinson.

Kevin has dozens of novels, novellas, and non-fiction books available and is producing more every day. He currently lives in Sugar Land, Texas, with his amazing wife Kara—though the two of them are actively working to downsize into an RV and travel full time while Kevin writes about all of it.

Kevin helps will-be authors start their book businesses through his weekly podcasts and through books like 30-Day Author.

               

Apart from his extraordinary writing talents and thirst to help fellow authors, Kevin is also known for his adventurous spirit. He and his wife recently sold their house and set off on a full-time RV adventure.

In this interview Kevin covers Draft2Digital in depth:

  • Draft2Digital is an aggregator publisher that helps authors get their books to all the major e-book retailers including Apple iBooks,  Kobo, Scribd, Barnes and Noble, 24 Symbols, Inktera and Tolino.
  • Using Draft2Digital for book distribution doesn’t cost any up-front fees. Instead, they take a small commission from book sales. This means that they are vested in your books selling. If you sell no books, they make no money.
  • It also provides an e-book conversion service. In under 10 minutes, it can take your word document and convert it into epub, Mobi and pdf files. And amazingly this is all totally FREE and you don’t need to use them for distribution in order to use this service. Incredible!
  • Being the amazing platform and service that it is Draft2Digital also provide a built-in service so that when you load your manuscript you can insert front and back matter such as copyright and even “also buys” leading readers to your next book in the series or other book titles.
  • And as if all that wasn’t enough, they also created Books2Read where you can create Universal Book Links (UBLs) for your books. This means you can have one link that can be used on your website or anywhere else such as in ads for example. The best part is when readers click on the link they can choose the retailer platform they prefer to buy their book on. In future when they click the link, it will remember their favorite platform. So super intuitive!

Kevin also talks extensively about the benefits of going wide and how to best approach it.
